Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Q & A

What is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?

BPH is an enlarged prostate and a common problem for men as they get older.

During puberty, your prostate goes through its first growing phase and doubles in size. Around age 25, the prostate gland starts its second growing phase, which continues for the rest of your life.

Your urethra — the tube that carries urine from your bladder — runs through the center of your prostate. As your prostate enlarges, it compresses the tube, causing urinary symptoms.

What are the symptoms of BPH?

Urinary frequency is one of the early symptoms of BPH. You may feel the urge to urinate every 1-2 hours, especially at night. Other BPH symptoms include:

  • Feeling bladder fullness after urination
  • Urinary urgency
  • Slow urine stream
  • Urine stream that starts and stops
  • Difficulty initiating urination
  • Feeling the need to push to urinate

Over time, your BPH may lead to more serious or bothersome health issues, such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or kidney damage.

What happens during a BPH consultation?

When you visit YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness for a BPH consultation, you can expect a comprehensive exam. The team takes a holistic approach to medicine and evaluates your whole-body health, not just your prostate.

During your consultation, the team asks detailed questions about your symptoms, personal medical history, and the types of medications and supplements you take.

Your provider performs a physical exam and rectal exam to assess prostate size and may request bloodwork or urinalysis to screen for health issues such as prostate cancer.

How is BPH treated?

YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness offers many treatment options for BPH, including:

Oral medications

Oral medications are the first line of treatment for BPH and include prescriptions that alleviate symptoms and slow down prostate growth.

Rezum™ water vapor therapy

Rezum water vapor therapy is a minimally invasive, in-office procedure that removes excess prostate tissue to improve urinary symptoms. YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness prefers this device, made by Boston Scientific, for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms.

UroLift®

UroLift is a surgically implanted device that “opens the curtains” of the lateral lobes of your prostate. UroLift is an in-office procedure.

GreenLight™ laser

Made by Boston Scientific, the GreenLight laser is an outpatient procedure the team at YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness uses for advanced cases of BPH. This includes patients who need to use blood thinners or have a large prostate (up to 286 cc).

Patients sometimes experience difficulty urinating after the GreenLight laser procedure due to the local anesthetic.
